SJSL REFEREE's CORNER

Instructions for referees assigned to Winter/Spring
SJGSL or SJSL games...

February 24, 2004  Instructions for referees assigned to Winter/Spring…

  1. Referees will be given the following information by the Assignor:
    1. The date of the match(s) and the Home Club name
    2. The number of games and age/conference of teams (in some cases, the first game home team # is given)
    3. The web site address to directly obtain Club Representative Contact information and field directions

                                                               i.      Saturday Matches – SJGSL at www.SJGSL.org

ii.      Sunday Matches – SJSL at www.SJSLorg

  1. Referees will access the appropriate web site:
    1. SJGSL.Org – go to Member Clubs for Contact information which will also have the club’s internet web sites for field directions
    2. SJSL.Org – go to Club info and then either select Club Reps or Field Directions

  1. In the past, referees have always been given the name and phone number of the club rep by the assignor. Every referee was always expected to contact the club rep.  However, this did not always happen.  The club rep and field assignment information can now be found by simply clicking on the appropriate League web sites noted above.  The Leagues want each referee to get this information from the websites, not from the assignor.  This is the first step in a process intended to streamline the assigning process, hopefully to the benefit of all concerned, i.e., referees, assignors, club reps and the Leagues.
    1. Contacting the clubs is important because it prevents officials from:

                                                               i.      Going to the wrong field based on your previous assignments to Club

ii.      Not knowing that the games have been cancelled due to locally unplayable field conditions even though the respective Leagues may not have cancelled ALL matches

iii.      Multiple fields at a Club venue prevents listing on web page

iv.      Waiting for game payments from League/Clubs for last minute cancelled/no-show matches by a team/club for any number of reasons if they failed to contact you in a timely manner

    1. When using email, the subject line should contain references to SJSL or USSF referee weekend assignments at a particular Club to prevent your internet provider from thinking it’s a SPAM message
    2. Whether by phone or email - include your name and telephone number as well as the number of games and age/conference of the teams to assist the Club Representative in identifying the field you will be on
    3. When leaving information by phone, please speak slowly and clearly when leaving your return contact information.
    4. If you leave a phone message or send an email, you should receive a return message with specific field designations from the Club.
If you did not get a return call, inform Referee@sjsl.org and attach copy of email message to club or indicate date and time of your telephone call to the Club Representative.  Clubs are also instructed to contact Referee@sjsl.org if a referee did not notify the Club representative of their assignment.
